A CHURCH that raised more than £200,000 for a major renovation project aims to complete a second vital phase of building work before its centenary.

Ferryhill Methodist Church underwent a refurbishment project in 2006 which was paid for with grants and funds raised by the congregation.

The work included a new heating system, lighting, decor, chairs, a kitchen and improved access to make the building more comfortable for worship and community events.

The church, on the Market Place, managed to clear the cost by autumn 2007 but just a year later discovered its roof needed replacing.

Members launched a fresh cash crusade to raise the £91,000 needed to replace the roof and for restoration of the tower while the scaffolding is erected.

Lay worker Margaret Foxall said: "It was like a kick in the stomach, and worrying for some members, after all that work to have to start again but the community has been very supportive and we’re on the last leg.

"We’re looking forward to completing this latest fund raising and having the work finished so we can enjoy the building and events for what they are not with the aim of raising money."

The church has around £22,000 left to find so the work can be done in time for the church’s 100th anniversary celebrations in 2010.

Event in aid of the Raise the Roof appeal will include a sponsored walk, strawberry tea, sponsored silence and a dance in June.

A book of prayers and meditations has been produced and is available for £3, of £3.70 for postage, from Margaret Foxall on 01740-655611.

To support the campaign visit a weekly coffee morning on Fridays, 9.30am to 11.30am or Sunday services at 10.30am or 6pm.
