TOWN councillors in Shildon have supported plans for a youth council in the area.

The Shildon Children and Young People’s Network (SCYPAN) and Shildon Youth Forum propose to establish a formal young people’s decision-making group to support the Forum.

A SCYPAN report submitted to Shildon Town Council stated: "The youth town council would allow the views and issues concerning young people to be discussed in a formal, regular, and representative arena.

"This would build upon the work and issues carried out and identified by the Shildon Youth Forum."

During a Shildon Town Council meeting last night, Coun Bob Stoker, and Coun Peter Quinn agreed to join the youth council’s working group, which is currently under development.

Town clerk Mick Waterson said: "This would encourage young people to engage with democratic decision making, and is something that we really should support."

A youth town council already operates in Sedgefield, and similar groups are being established in Great Aycliffe, Spennymoor, and Ferryhill.
