HOMELESS performers from Middlesbrough are starring in an opera that is being broadcast on a big screen.

My Secret Heart is a ground-breaking film and music installation commissioned by the charity Streetwise Opera.

It is based on a 17th century choral work Miserere Mei by Gregorio Allegri.

The opera has been created by around 100 Streetwise Opera performers around the country including 50 performers from their centres in Middlesbroughs English Churches Housing Group and Newcastles Byker Bridge and Ron Eager House.

Streetwise Operas mission is to give homeless and formerly homeless people opportunities to further their personal development through participation in quality music-making and to promote more positive attitudes towards homeless people.

As well as an annual production, Streetwise runs a weekly music programme in 10 homeless centres around the country.

A film version of the opera will be screened on Thursday from 6pm to 6.45pm on the BBC Big Screen in Centre Square in Middlesbrough which will be accompanied by a live staging by Streetwise performers.

Councillor David Budd, Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development at Middlesbrough Council said: "The public screening of My Secret Heart will bring something really special to Middlesbroughs Centre Square. Its a great opportunity for shoppers, workers and families to experience something completely different.

"I urge people to come along, whatever their taste in music or theatre - they may be pleasantly surprised! Anyone who is not able to make the main performance, neednt worry, the film will be shown on a rolling basis from 4.30pm onwards."
