ONE if the region’s most iconic buildings will take on a spectacular hue on Friday - when it is lit up in bright red.

The west end of York Minster will be illuminated in red, for one night only, to launch National Heart Month in February.

The British Heart Foundation’s new campaign, Red for Heart, is designed to raise awareness of the UK’s number one killer – heart and circulatory disease – and encourage people to raise much needed cash to help fight against heart disease.

Local resident and actor Andrew Dunn, who has appeared in Coronation Street and Dinner Ladies - now touring as a stage show - will switch the lights on at 5pm.

Minster spokesman Martin Sheppard said: "York Minster is at the heart of Yorkshire, so it’s very fitting that it will be a symbol in the Red for Heart campaign and the fight against heart disease.

"As people see the Minster close-up or in the distance on the night, we hope this magnificent building adorned in red light will inspire them to support the British Heart Foundation in its vital work."
