AN EAST Durham schoolgirl’s recycling message will be displayed across the district after she scooped the top prize in a competition.

Eleven-year-old Jennifer Carr’s poster design was selected from dozens of entries in a contest to promote doorstep recycling services in the area.

Jennifer, a Year 7 pupil at St Bede’s Comprehensive School, Peterlee received an Xbox 360 games console for her efforts and a framed copy of her winning design.

The competition, which was organised by recycling firm Greencycle and backed by District of Easington Council’s Pride in Easington campaign, received more than 200 entries.

John Fellowes, Greencycle General Manager, said: "The level of participation in the competition demonstrates the high level of interest in recycling among the very people who will eventually benefit most from it.

"The designs were many and varied and, I think all the judges would agree, were of a very high standard. Jennifer’s winning design promotes the spirit of recycling perfectly and all of us at Greencycle and Pride in Easington would like to offer our hearty congratulations."

Jennifer, from Peterlee, was presented with her prize during a special school assembly.
