YOUNGSTERS at a primary school have raised more than £150 for charity by holding two cake sales.

The pupils from Applegarth Primary School, in Northallerton, chose to make the RSPCA the recipient of their fundraising.

Children from the school’s all age groups split into two teams - Earth and Water - to raise the money.

The youngsters presented a cheque for £175.65 to a representative from the RSPCA during this afternoon’s lessons.

Teaching assistant Gill Cooper said: "The RSPCA has been in today, to receive the cheque and give the children a little talk.

"We have had two cake stalls, one before Christmas and one after.

"The children decided themselves to raise money for the RSPCA."

* The school is celebrating its centenary this year.

A celebration event will take place on June 8, to which former pupils are invited to contribute.

Headteacher Alison Goodwin said: "The children are excited about learning what life at the school was like in the past."
