A HOSPICE has raised almost £14,500 at its annual charity ball.

More than 160 people attended the Day At The Races ball at the Radisson Hotel, in Durham City, to raise money for Willow Burn Hospice.

The event was a double first for the Lanchester-based hospice, the first time the event has been held at the new hotel on Framwelgate Waterside and the first time it has been hosted by new chief executive Helen Mills.

Sir Bobby Robson was among the guests, while hospice patron Sir Tom Cowie made a guest appearance by video. Among the prizes in the charity auction was a cruise on a 50-foot luxury yacht, a box at Newcastle Racecourse, a family break at Kielder and a day’s shooting with Sir Tom.

Helen Mills, Chief Executive of Willow Burn Hospice said: "This year’s Ball was a hugely successful event with a great atmosphere throughout the night "We want to thank all of our supporters, from those who organised the event to our guests and sponsors.

"Their generosity is reflective of the support we receive every day from the communities we serve and it is humbling to know how highly regarded Willow Burn continues to be."

The hospice was opened in 1989 to provide palliative and end of life care services for Derwentside and the surrounding area.

As well as in-patient beds with Day Hospice, the Hospice provides 24-hour nursing, advice and support, Out-Patient Clinics, Hospice at Home Services and Bereavement Support Services.
