CONCERNS are mounting over road safety outside a school which lost its lollipop lady through retirement at the end of last year.

Jean Forbes hung up her pole after 35 years’ service at Vane Road Primary School, Newton Aycliffe, in December. So far Durham County Council has been unable to find a replacement for Mrs Forbes and the school has asked the police to step in.

Chris Foster, chair of governors at the school, said: "The school has discussed the vacancy with both the Council and the police and has an agreement for local police cover when resources allow, but we realise this is not ideal.

"The governing body of the school is meeting and intends to discuss the issue of the vacant post.

"In the meantime, we urge parents and carers to be vigilant and take extra care when crossing Central Avenue."
