A CHARITY that helps people with visual impairments is hoping to recruit volunteers to help with its work.

The County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted has appointed Carol McAllister as its new Volunteer Co-ordinator.

Her main role is to recruit people who can help the society to continue offering free services to all blind and partially sighted people in County Durham. She is seeking volunteers for a wide range of roles that are essential to the society’s work, which includes home visits to people who live alone. This requires volunteers call on someone regularly to possibly read their mail, help them write a letter, read the newspaper or just have a chat and a cup of tea.

"Support for blind and partially sighted people in their own home is a vital part of helping people stay independent," said Ms McAllister.

"If you have a couple of hours to spare once a week, please give me a call as I have clients in Chester-le-treet, Durham, Consett and Stanley, Newton Aycliffe and Barnard Castle who would really benefit from your support."

The society offers full training and re-imburses out of pocket expenses.

Anyone interested should call Ms McAllister on 0191-386 8175.
