A MAN is fighting for his life today after being knocked down as he made his way home from a pub.

A police spokesman said the accident happened on the B1283 at the Plough Inn, Haswell Plough, County Durham, at 8.50pm last night.

The spokesman said: "The accident happened opposite the Plough Inn at 8.50pm when a Vauxhall Vivaro van collided with a pedestrian who suffered serious head injuries.

"The driver of the van, a 30-year-old local man, was travelling east on the B1283 when the male pedestrian stepped into the path of the van.

"The pedestrian, a 34-year-old man from Haswell, had left the Plough and was intending to cross the road.

"He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham with injuries described as life threatening. The driver of the van was not hurt."

Police closed the road for three hours while they pedestrian was treated, the vehicle removed and officers carried out their inquiries.

The pedestrian was later transferred to the intensive care unit of Newcastle General Hospital, where his condition has been described as critical.
