YOUNG people are plugging into a new computer craze as part of a scheme to steer them away from crime and anti-social behaviour.

It is hoped that mass ‘dance mat’ sessions at Peterlee Leisure Centre will also encourage youngsters to get more involved in physical activity.

Organised through East Durham’s Positive Futures programme, the weekly two-hour ‘Buzz’ event will see more than a dozen games console-style dance mats hooked up to a big screen.

Youngsters will be challenged to keep up with the on-screen dance steps while competing against their friends.

Easington District Council positive futures co-ordinator Lisa Denham, said: "The dance mat challenge is all about mass participation and enabling the young people to get involved together.

"However, our overall aim is to provide a diversionary activity for young people that not only deters them from getting involved in anti-social behaviour but also gives them the opportunity to get involved in physical activity."

The Saturday evening sessions are being funded by Positive Futures and Positive Activities for Young People.

They were introduced after young members of the Positive Futures programme tried the activity elsewhere in the North-East and expressed an interest in bringing the equipment to the district.

The 16 dance mats are linked to a computer screen that plays music and displays a sequence of steps to follow. Players are then rated on their performance.

Sessions cost £1.50 per week and run from 6pm to 8pm every Saturday until March 21.

They are open to youngsters aged between eight and 16-years-old. Those wishing to take part must have written consent from their parent or guardian. Consent forms will be available from reception at each session.
