MEMBERS of a singing group in the region are preparing for one of the biggest concerts of their lives – in the holiest of locations.

The Sing Live group, Britain’s largest independent singing organisation, which is based in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, has been invited to perform at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.

It is not known whether Pope Benedict XVI will be present at the performance, in the spring.

Members will sing during Mass, in the Basilica, at 5pm, on April 25.

Sing Live has more than 2,500 members throughout the UK and the US.

Members have performed at a number of leading venues around the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall.

Within two days of the Vatican trip being offered to members, more than 150 singers around the UK had registered their interest.

Musical director Steve Roberts says the group’s performance in the Vatican will be a departure from its usual fare.

He said: “We normally sing a lot of songs from musicals, swing and jazz. This will be a completely religious programme.

It is a very exciting opportunity.”

St Peter’s Basilica, which dates back to the 16th Century, can hold a congregation of up to 60,000 people.

A church has stood on the site since the 4th Century.

Sing Live was formed ten years ago, and is operated from offices in Thirsk Road, Northallerton.

After gaining success in this country, an overseas arm of the company was set up.

It is run by managing director John Morris, another co-founder, in Florida.

The group’s 300-strong North-East choir, which was set up in 2003, is one of nine regional Sing Live communities in the UK.
