A YOUNG surfer has successfully mastered the waves to finish runner-up in an international competition.
Evan Rogers, from Saltburn, east Cleveland, left the icy North Sea behind to take part in the European Junior Surfing Championship off the coast of North Africa.
The 18-year-old, who is studying for his A-levels at Guisborough’s Prior Pursglove College, finished second in the final of the junior longboard division in the contest at Agadir in Morocco.
“I was hoping to do really well in the competition, but coming second was absolutely great,” he said.
“It was my last competition as a junior because I have turned 18 now, so I’m not sure what the future holds, but it was a good way to finish.”
The teenager, who was representing his father’s home country of Wales, helped the team secure seventh overall in the competition.
