Elite League: Mincoffs Newcastle Vipers 1-2 Nottingham Panthers (After penalties)

HAVING broken their losing streak on Saturday night, the Vipers earned themselves another point on Sunday as they took the much-fancied Nottingham Panthers to penalties.

However, a Johan Molin penalty strike gave Panthers the win they needed to make it a clean sweep of three from three road wins in the North East on league business.

Panthers have now won their last four and for the Vipers a three point weekend is a welcome return for Rob Wilson's men.

After forty minutes of hockey this game remained goalless with both sides missing out on three powerplay opportunities but the breakthrough eventually came the way of the home side when Todd Griffith fired home at 42.53.

The advantage was not to last long, however. And at 46.11 Panthers tied it up with a strike by David Clarke.

From the face off to restart the game Andre Payette of Vipers and Rumun Ndur picked up fighting majors but this could not spark either side into more goal action and the game went to a scoreless overtime period and then into the shootout where Molin was the only scorer.
