In today’s expected arctic snow conditions Haughton’s residents are at risk of falls, as the Council does not routinely clear footpaths as a matter of priority. Extra care is needed on these. Emergency services, public and industrial transport are cleared first. There are nine gritters on standby, ready to act on information received from three road weather stations placed near the Borough. The Met Office has issued a weather warning for December 4th. Hanna Bayman of the BBC said: “We are expecting a snowy night, the Met Office feel that heavy snow is expected with a cold day of 4C the top temperature. There will be severe weather over the northern hills with up to 5cm at lower ground.” Be prepared, as there may be blizzards, drifting and heavy snow in the north east, with an 80% risk of disruption, especially on ground above 150 metres.

Andy Buxton EHO notes that there is little definitive guidance issued by the HSE to deal with trips and falls with regard snow and ice clearance. Prevailing common sense suggests a trip outside should include warm clothes, and shoes or boots with a good tread. Darlington’s highway team use salt as the most cost effective de-icing agent. A salt store is placed at the top of Beech Road and other locations. Motorists are reminded to drive carefully according to the weather conditions and to keep the windscreen free of ice and frost. Use a screen wash with a low temperature. The legal minimum tread depth of tyres is1.6mm and the tyres must have sufficient pressure in them. To be safe make sure enough petrol or diesel is in the tank to complete the journey. Have access to a de-icer spray, and use it as needed. Set off sooner than usual and tell people where you are going. Carry a mobile phone.
