POLICE officers and staff in the region have been rewarded for their service.

Chief Superintendent Ian Spittal, of North Yorkshire Police, held an area commander’s ceremony, at the Guildhall, in York, yesterday.

The awards were presented to police officers, police staff and members of the public for their outstanding work and bravery.

Among those to receive awards was the team of detectives that worked on the investigation of career conwoman Heather Mook, from York, who was jailed after feeding rat poison and anti-depressants to her husband.

Seven police officers and one member of police staff received crown court commendations.

The case involved the seizure and analysis of a large number of financial and medical documents.

A number of medical experts were consulted in relation to the use of rat poison.

The case also re-examined and investigated other historic offences committed by Mook against other family members.

Mook was found guilty of poisoning and jailed indefinitely, in May.

Chief Supt Spittal said: "These awards recognise the outstanding contribution over and above the call of duty, which our officers and staff have made to policing our county.

"These cases demand tenacity, attention to detail, intuition and dedication, often with staff working very long hours.

"I am privileged to present them and acknowledge the outstanding work of a very dedicated and committed workforce."
