A GIRL who takes her problems in her stride and has saved her grandmother’s life has been hailed a hero.

Rachael Lancaster’s inspirational story has earned her the title of Morrisons Local Hero.

The 12-year-old, from Spennymoor, County Durham, has a brittle bone condition and has had nine operations on her left leg.

She has had her leg in plaster 34 times, worn a support frame, had metal plates fitted to her bones and has regularly used crutches since she was diagnosed with the disease six years ago.

But despite her problems, Rachael has also been a lifesaver for her diabetic grandmother, Jean Bolton.

Earlier this year, she arrived at the home they share, in Catherine Close, to find the door locked. When she looked through the window, she saw her grandmother passed out on the floor. Recognising she had fallen into a coma, she dialled 999.

When paramedics arrived to treat Mrs Bolton, Rachael was told she had probably saved her life.

Mrs Bolton said: “She is amazing and never complains.

She is a great help around the house and knows my diabetes is unpredictable, so is always prepared to help me. The day she phoned for an ambulance, she did not panic.

“She just does whatever needs doing to live her life and to pull me round.”

Aunt Linda Miller nominated Rachael, a pupil at Spennymoor School, for the award, which recognises inspirational youngsters from the region.

She said: “Rachael is a strong girl and never lets things get her down.

“She never ever complains.

She helps her grandma so much and I wanted her to know she is appreciated.”

Rachael wants to work with animals when she is older, possibly as a veterinary surgeon, so the store is donating £500 to the RSPCA in her honour.

She also won £500 in shopping vouchers.

Rachael said: “I have got to just get on with things – there is nothing else to do.

“There are a few things I cannot do as much as friends, but I try not to let it stop me.

“Grandma and I just look after each other, so it was a surprise to win this.”
