A WOMAN was talked out of jumping into the River Wear by police officers tonight after a short standoff.

Around 6pm the Sunderland lifeboat joined the coastguard and officers from Northumbria Police after reports that a distressed woman was sitting on the edge of Palmers Hill Quay, near to Wearmouth Bridge.

After speaking with the woman the police negotiators managed to persuade her to climb back over the railings before she was taken into custody.
