A LONG-STANDING Hartlepool charity is seeking a volunteer to join its board of trustees.

The Henry Smith Educational Charity offers grants to children and young people living in Hartlepool to help them buy vital equipment, such as books to aid their studies.

Three trustees are nominated by Hartlepool Council and four are co-opted. The current vacancy is for one co-opted trustee.

The charity dates back to the 17th century and was set up following a bequest from local wealthy man Henry Smith.

The aim of the charity is to promote the education of young people in Hartlepool under the age of 25, who are in need of financial assistance to help them succeed.

Alan Macnab, of Hartlepool Council, said: "This is a good opportunity for someone from the business or wider community who has an interest in the education of young people.

"Experience of being a trustee or involvement with a charity or other organisation would be useful and the trustees normally meet about six times a year."

For more details or an application form, contact Mr Macnab on 01429- 523763. The closing date for applications is Monday, December 15.
