Middleton Crafts shop to close after 40 years in business

Middleton Crafts, based in Middleton in Teesdale, announced it will close on October 12 after four decades.

Opened in 1986, the shop at Chapel Row has long provided a space for makers from across the surrounding area to sell their handmade creations.

Announcing the closure on social media, the group said it no longer had enough members to continue operating the shop.

In a statement, members said: "It is with deep regret that we announce the forthcoming closure of Middleton Crafts on Monday, October 12.

"We no longer have sufficient members to continue operating the shop.

"After forty successful years serving the community, this has been an extremely difficult decision made with heavy hearts."

The group said figures gathered over the past two years had revealed a steady decline in customers and sales despite efforts to breathe new life into the business.

However, they said wider economic pressures and competition within the village had contributed to the challenges facing the shop.

The statement added: "Over the past 24 months, our data has shown a steady decline in both footfall and sales, despite our best efforts to revitalise the shop through new signage, a refreshed interior, and encouraging new crafters to join us.

"These challenges reflect the wider economic climate and competition in the village and have contributed to the position we now find ourselves in.

"Middleton Crafts has proudly celebrated its 40th birthday this year, having served as a creative hub for so many.

"All things have their time, and the shop has had a truly wonderful run."

The group has urged supporters to visit the shop one final time before it closes its doors next month, thanking residents and visitors for their support throughout its four-decade history.

Members said: "Once again, many thanks for your support and please do take this opportunity to have a final browse and buy those Christmas gifts."

Since the announcement, many customers have shown their support online.

One person said: "I'm really sorry to hear this, I've been coming to the shop for over 30 years.

"I wish I lived closer I'd have loved to help out. Such a loss it will be sadly missed."

While another said: "I'm very sad to read this. I have loved coming into the shop for years and purchasing lovely craftwork.

"The lovely lady who does needlework and patchwork I have really enjoyed chatting to over the years and buying your work.

"I will miss my trips to Middleton Crafts."
