Sunderland padel courts opening at Silksworth Community Centre

The courts at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre, will replace existing outdoor tennis courts, following plans approved by Sunderland City Council’s planning and highways committee on Monday, September 28.

Everyone Active, which operates the centre, said the development would meet growing demand for the fast-rising racket sport and allow year-round play.

A spokesperson for Everyone Active said: "The new courts will allow people to play throughout the year, including during the winter months and bad weather."

Planning officers supported the scheme, highlighting its potential to increase access to sport and promote healthy lifestyles.

A council report said: "Given the apparent rise in demand for padel tennis within the region, officers are of the view that the proposal would offer an opportunity to play a varied form of tennis all year round."

The report also noted that outdoor tennis courts are used less frequently in winter and poor weather, supporting the case for conversion.

Planning documents describe the new courts as featuring a "pillar-type structure, anti-injury mesh infill panels, and approved glass" for a "clean and minimalist aesthetic."

The courts will use the latest artificial grass technology and be suitable for all ages and abilities, from beginners to experienced players.

Lighting and landscaping will also be included, along with new social areas around the courts.

The courts will operate during daytime opening hours only.
