A gruelling mountain trek has helped raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Ten staff members from Sunderland-based renewable energy developer OnPath Energy completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in support of the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen and Beatson Cancer Charity in Glasgow.

The 25-mile route takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, beginning and ending in the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

Eve Lewer, a member of the OnPath Energy team, said: "We’ve learned and experienced a great deal about how the amazing Soup Kitchen team provides practical help and support to local people in real need, which gave us the motivation we needed when the going got tough.

"We’re all thrilled with how much we’ve raised for these two fantastic charities and really grateful to everyone that’s contributed to our fundraising efforts."

The team completed the challenge in just over 11 hours, climbing more than 1,500 metres in the process.

Funds raised will be split evenly between the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen, OnPath’s nominated charity for its Sunderland headquarters, and Beatson Cancer Charity, the nominated charity for its Glasgow office.

OnPath selected the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen as its English dedicated charity at the start of last year, and has since raised more than £6,000 through various fundraising efforts.

In addition to raising funds, 11 OnPath employees have volunteered at the soup kitchen’s High Street West headquarters, serving meals and talking with service users.

The Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen was founded in 2019 by CEO Andrea Bell and offers hot meals, outreach, and community support to those in need.

The kitchen operates from 6pm to 7pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with the help of more than 60 volunteers.

It also delivers a growing range of educational and life skills courses through its TriBeCa Community Hub.
