A woman has died after a crash between a closed a "busy stretch" of the A69 in Northumberland.
Emergency services were called to the road between Haydon Bridge and Hexham shortly before 1.30pm on Saturday (September 26).
Northumbria Police said a black Honda was travelling westbound when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a blue Volkswagen Tiguan travelling the opposite way.
A passenger in the VW, a woman in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Sergeant Greg Huntley said: "This is an incredibly tragic incident where a woman has lost her life.
"The thoughts of everyone here at Northumbria Police are with her loved ones.
"Our investigation is underway, and we are now appealing for further witnesses who we have not yet spoken with to come forward."
The driver of the Honda, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
A section of the A69 was closed for several hours while emergency services and collision investigators worked at the scene.
The road has since reopened.
"We know this is a very busy stretch of road in Northumberland and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions," Sgt Huntley added.

Officers have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
