A popular County Durham farmers market will return this weekend with more than 40 independent traders setting up inside the distinctive animal pens of an auction mart.
Gather North Events' Farmers & Indie Market will be back at Middleton Auction Mart in Middleton-in-Teesdale on Saturday (September 26), from 9am until 1pm.
The free event brings together food producers, bakers, makers, artists and other independent businesses from across County Durham, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Northumberland, while fresh fish and seafood are brought to the market from Eyemouth.
The market is organised by Naomi Katze, owner of Gather North Events, and has become a regular fixture in Upper Teesdale since being established in 2023/24.
One of its most distinctive features is the setting, with traders using the actual animal pens at Middleton Auction Mart rather than a conventional market hall or outdoor square.
Gather North says it was the first organisation in the UK to use the animal pens inside an auction mart for a recurring farmers market, while Middleton was also its first market in the North East.
Organisers say the aim from the outset was to create a "traditional farmers market in and around Upper Teesdale while supporting authentic local produce and craftsmanship."
More than 40 traders are expected at this weekend's event, with visitors able to buy directly from farmers and independent makers.
The line-up includes butcher-farmers, cheese producers, free-range egg sellers and fruit, vegetable and flower growers, alongside bakers, artists, sewers and other independent craftspeople.
Gather North says traders are "carefully selected", with an emphasis on "high-quality produce and independent businesses."
Earlier markets have included artisan bread, fish, cheese, free-range eggs, baked goods, pies, pastries, scotch eggs, chocolates, cheesecakes, honey, beer and cider.
Visitors have also previously been able to buy pet treats, chilli sauces, curries, Moroccan food, artwork and gifts.
The market has developed around a mixture of regular traders and new businesses, with organisers continuing to bring different producers to Middleton throughout the year.
Gather North also has a wider programme planned for the rest of 2026, including monthly Farmers & Indie Markets at two venues and festive farmers markets later in the year.

The company is also organising Rainbow Events seasonal alternative fairs and a new Pet Fest, with further events being planned for 2027.
Visitors to the Middleton market this weekend will also be able to pick up information about the wider programme.
The Farmers & Indie Market takes place at Middleton Auction Mart, Middleton-in-Teesdale, DL12 0PJ, on Saturday, September 26, from 9am until 1pm.
Entry and parking are free, and the event is dog-friendly.
