South Park boardwalk remains closed after vandalism

South Park, a well-loved green space in the town, has seen repeated damage to a section of boardwalk overlooking the pond, with the once-picturesque view still blocked by metal barriers.

The area has been sealed off since July after the structure was targeted by vandals.

New photographs show the boardwalk remains inaccessible, with metal barriers still in place and red-and-white tape preventing access.

Broken fencing and holes in sections of the boardwalk also remain visible, highlighting the extent of the damage.

Darlington Borough Council said the repeated vandalism was "disappointing" and that the area remains cordoned off to "keep visitors safe".

Council bosses also said repair work is expected to start "soon".

A council spokesperson said: "It is very disappointing that repeated vandalism has meant this small area of the park has been cordoned off to keep visitors safe.

"We have met with contractors and expect work to repair the damage will start soon."

A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, previously said the situation was "such a shame".

He said: "I don't understand why people feel the need to repeatedly damage this area, which brings joy to so many people.

"It is such a shame, and I hope they find who is responsible."
