A learner driver was caught behind the wheel of an uninsured car with a tyre worn down to the cords during a police stop in Teesside.
Cleveland Police officers stopped the car in Stockton at about 5.30am on Thursday, September 10 during extra patrols prompted by residents’ concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour in Newtown and Wrensfield.
Police said a roadside check found one tyre worn through to the cords along its inner edge.
Further checks showed that the driver held only a provisional licence, and the car was uninsured.
Police subsequently seized the car, with the driver expected to appear in court at a later date.
The stop was part of a wider Stockton neighbourhood-policing operation responding to increased complaints about drugs, crime and nuisance from local residents.
Response PC Guy said: "Those who drive without a valid licence or with a defective vehicle are key contributors to serious or even fatal collisions on our roads, something we are desperate to curtail.
"As we move into autumn and towards the winter months, I'd ask drivers to check their vehicles, focusing particularly on safety components such as tyres and lights.
"We will continue to deal with those who choose to flout the law and take risks on the road, as well as putting others at risk."
