A new supported housing scheme for homeless people has been approved in Sunderland.
The scheme, set to be developed at The Elms West, Ashbrooke, will offer seven bedrooms and 24/7 on-site support to help residents transition to independent living.
Initially submitted by Sunderland City Council, the project is designed to provide stable accommodation for individuals leaving temporary housing, care, hospital stays, or rough sleeping.
The application states: "The proposed accommodation will provide safe, stable housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, offering a vital stepping stone toward independent living.
"This initiative aims to offer a dignified, supportive environment that fosters stability."
The scheme, to be operated by Tyne Housing, will include a "thorough housing needs assessment" and risk assessment for each resident, carried out by the council’s Housing Options Team.
It is reported that visitors will not be allowed at the property, in line with similar supported housing schemes in Sunderland.

It is also reported that the application was discussed multiple times by the council’s planning and highways committee, with decisions deferred to address concerns about parking and to request a travel and management plan.
Residents have previously raised concerns about parking pressures in the area, but the travel plan looks to encourage staff to use sustainable transport and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
The scheme must be implemented within three years under planning conditions.
