A Darlington man has conquered Mount Kilimanjaro after 14 months of preparation to support a mental health charity.

Joel Hutchinson reached the 5,895-metre summit for Darlington Mind, raising more than £4,000 through a wider fundraising campaign.

The journey began when Darlington Mind was named as the charity of choice at Mr Hutchinson’s workplace, EE.

He said: "Kilimanjaro was the culmination of 14 months of training, preparation and fundraising, so reaching the summit was an incredibly proud moment for me.

"The challenge was tough, but having the motivation of raising money for Darlington Mind gave me a real purpose throughout the whole journey."

The climb fulfilled a lifelong ambition and marked the end of a broader fundraising campaign that included guiding groups up Helvellyn and other outdoor challenges.

Mr Hutchinson said: "What started as a personal challenge became something much bigger than that.

"I was able to raise over £4,000 for a cause that does incredibly important work in our community, and I’m genuinely proud that all of the training, fundraising and hard days have ultimately contributed towards helping other people."

Throughout his journey, he spoke openly about his own mental health and the value of working toward a positive goal.

His efforts inspired colleagues and members of the community to get involved through donations and participation.

Jemma Gregory, marketing and development officer at Darlington Mind, said: "We’re incredibly grateful to Joel for everything he has done for Darlington Mind.

"Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro is a fantastic achievement and reflects the time and commitment he has given to the challenge."

She said Mr Hutchinson’s impact went beyond fundraising.

Ms Gregory said: "By sharing his journey, speaking openly about mental health and promoting Darlington Mind and the support we provide, he has helped more people learn about our work.

"As an independent local charity, that support is extremely valuable to us, and we’re very proud of what he has achieved."

Darlington Mind provides mental health and wellbeing support across Darlington, South Durham, Hambleton and areas North Yorkshire.
