A North Yorkshire bridge has been closed indefinitely after being struck by a heavy goods vehicle just hours before the Tour of Britain cycle race is due to visit the area.
The Grade II-listed Middleham Bridge, in Wensleydale, was struck by an HGV yesterday evening (Thursday, September 3), causing significant damage to its decorative masonry arches.
North Yorkshire Council initially hoped temporary work could make the structure safe and allow the road to reopen.
However, following a further assessment today engineers have concluded the damaged arch is too unstable for temporary repairs.
Large sections of stonework have been lost, while the impact has also displaced part of the arch, creating what the council described as a “significant structural risk”.
As a result, the bridge will remain closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists while a repair plan is developed.
North Yorkshire Council leader Councillor Carl Les said: “The damaged arch has not only lost sections of stonework, but has also become displaced creating a significant structural risk.
“Because of this, the listed bridge will remain closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists while a plan for repairs is developed.
“Concrete barriers and fencing have been installed to secure the site and prevent access to the bridge to ensure the safety of all road users and pedestrians.”
Cllr Les thanked residents and motorists for their patience and said further updates would be issued as repair plans progressed.
The closure is also expected to cause disruption ahead of the Tour of Britain cycle race, with stage four due to finish in Leyburn tomorrow, Saturday, September 5.
Organisers have confirmed the event will go ahead as planned, although spectators are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow signed diversions.

Motorists travelling from the south towards Leyburn are advised to use the A6108, B6268 and A684 via Masham and Bedale.
Traffic approaching from the north is being directed via the A1 and A684 through Bedale.
Further delays are expected tomorrow because of rolling road closures as the Tour of Britain makes its way towards the finish in Leyburn.
