A Darlington woman has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years after admitting causing unnecessary suffering to a dog that had weight loss and poor bodily condition.
Jenna Reed, 39, of Rockell Avenue, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on August 20.
Reed pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, a Bichon Frise-type dog named Jim, between August 24 and September 26, 2025.
The court heard Reed failed to investigate and address the causes of the dog’s poor condition, an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
Reed was fined £200 and ordered to pay an £80 victim surcharge and £480 in costs.

A 10-year disqualification order was imposed, preventing her from owning or caring for animals in any capacity.
The court also ordered her to be deprived of a second Bichon Frise dog.
A collection order was made, with benefit deductions to recover the £760 balance at £20 per month.
Reed’s guilty plea was taken into account.
