A new discount store has opened in a North East town, sparking a mixed reaction form locals.

One Beyond, one of the UK’s fastest-growing value retailers, has launched its latest branch at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre in Hartlepool, taking over the former River Island unit.

The opening comes as part of ongoing efforts to revitalise Middleton Grange, which is currently projected to lose around £1.21 million this financial year.

However, the arrival of One Beyond has prompted mixed reactions from residents.

Some described it as "yet another budget shop", while others questioned the value of adding another discount retailer to the shopping centre where "no-one wants to pay the parking fees".

However, not all feedback was negative; one resident said: "Thank you for investing in Hartlepool."

Others simply said they were "excited."

Darron Hitchcock, area manager at One Beyond, said: "We are really excited to be the latest addition to Middleton Shopping Centre and we look forward to seeing customers, new and old, in the days and weeks ahead."

Nik McDonald, shopping centre manager, said: "I'm delighted to see One Beyond open its doors.

"Attracting growing national retailers shows the confidence businesses have in both the centre and Hartlepool.

"We wish the team every success and look forward to working with them and seeing shoppers enjoy everything the new store has to offer."

The shopping centre, now owned by the Hartlepool Development Corporation, is set for a £13.8 million redevelopment.

Plans include the partial demolition of the north-east corner and the creation of a Nuclear and Electrical Trades Academy at the former Binns building.
