"One of our most gifted students" is how St John's Catholic School headteacher Lisa Byron sums up maths whizz Imogen Chen.

Imogen not only finished her maths A-level in 2025 – a year early and earning a top A* grade – but today also secured an A* in further maths and an A in chemistry at the Bishop Auckland school.

She hopes her grades – and the A* extended project qualification she wrote on the implications of China’s emergence as a global superpower – will stand her in good stead to follow her dreams of joining the financial sector.

She said: "The teachers at St John’s are always here for me, even offering up their free time to make sure that I was able to reach my full potential.

"I will always be grateful for this, and to my parents.

"I hope in the future I will be able to In the future support them in the same way that they have supported me."

Imogen will now go on to her bachelor’s degree in maths at the University of Bath before she hopes to begin her career in finance.
