A Teesside fishmonger has been handed a zero-star food hygiene rating after inspectors said "major improvement" was needed across all assessed areas.

Overall cleanliness and food storage came under fire in the report.

It comes as food safety officers from Middlesbrough Council inspected Catch of the Day on Parliament Road, Middlesbrough on June 29.

The business received the lowest possible Food Hygiene Rating Scheme score.

Inspectors said the business needed major improvement in the hygienic handling of food, including the preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage of food products.

The report also said major improvements are needed in the cleanliness and condition of facilities and the building itself, including the layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities and pest control measures.

A further major improvement requirement was identified in the management of food safety.

This category assesses whether a business has appropriate systems and checks in place to ensure food is safe to eat.

It also analyses if staff understand food hygiene requirements and whether inspectors have confidence standards will be maintained in the future.

A spokesperson for Catch of the Day previously declined to comment on the findings.

The Food Standards Agency advises that a zero rating means urgent improvement is required, while a five-star rating indicates hygiene standards are very good.

Food hygiene ratings are not permanent and can change following further inspections if improvements are made.

The Northern Echo has contacted Catch of the Day for comment.
