Thomas the Tank Engine fans will love Saltburn Miniature Railway

The Saltburn Miniature Railway is one of of the most charming ways to experience the North Yorkshire coast, combining seaside nostalgia with a journey through picturesque Victorian gardens.

It's also a must-visit for young Thomas the Tank Engine fans and nostalgic grown-ups too, with the railway's locomotives resembling the charm and character of the beloved TV characters.

The Saltburn Miniature Railway first opened in 1947, when it was established by H. Dunn of Bishop Auckland.

At the time, the line measured just 300 yards and ran from near the former Brine Baths Pump House along the flood plain of Skelton Beck.

A year later, Dunn extended the route towards the seafront and added a reversing loop around the former tennis courts.

In 1949, the railway acquired a unique miniature locomotive known as Blacolvesley.

After falling into dereliction in the latter half of the 20th century, local enthusiasts formed the Saltburn Miniature Railway Association in 1983 with the aim of bringing the attraction back to life.

Following years of restoration work, trains returned to the tracks in 1985.

The railway has continued to grow since then, evolving into Saltburn Miniature Railway Ltd and remaining a much-loved fixture of the town's tourism offer.

When do trains run?

The railway officially starts operating at 12pm, although services may begin slightly earlier if preparations have been completed.

Visitors are advised to look for signs at both Cat Nab and Forest Halt stations marked "Trains Running Today".

If the signs are not displayed, services may have been delayed or cancelled, often because of poor weather or track conditions.

Where can I buy tickets?

Tickets are available from the Ticket Office at Cat Nab station, which is located next to the seafront car park.

Passengers boarding at Forest Halt can pay when they complete their journey and return to Cat Nab.

Both cash and card payments are accepted.

How long is the journey?

The railway runs along approximately 1km of track through the Valley Gardens.

A full return trip typically takes between 15 and 20 minutes, although trains do not run to a strict timetable and are operated as required throughout the day.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs, prams and pushchairs are all welcome aboard the miniature railway. However, bicycles cannot be stored in the carriages.

Is it accessible?

The railway has space for up to two wheelchairs in specially adapted carriages.

If there is insufficient room on a train, wheelchairs can be stored at the Ticket Office and passengers requiring assistance can speak to members of the train crew.

What can visitors expect?

The railway runs between Cat Nab, close to the seafront, and Forest Halt in the Valley Gardens woodland, covering around 1km of track.

The route provides passengers with a different perspective of the Valley Gardens, one of the area's best-known green spaces.
