Man dies after crashing into tree in Eaglescliffe

Police, paramedics, and an air ambulance were called to Yarm Road after a silver Mercedes CLS220 crashed at 8.15am today (August 5). 

The road was closed between Witham Avenue and Chestnut Road following the incident, sparking traffic in the area during rush hour. 

Cleveland Police has now confirmed that a man, aged 56, has sadly died. The force said the crash is believed to have happened during a medical episode.

Police officer Nathan Hood from the Matrix team said: “The 56-year-old man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Officers and the family of the man who died would like to thank members of the public who carried out CPR until paramedics arrived.”

An air ambulance landed at the nearby Preston Park following the crash, with pictures showing the helicopter on the field while firefighters blocked Yarm Road.

A North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) spokesperson said: “We received a call at 8.17am on Wednesday, August 5 to reports of a road traffic incident on Yarm Road in Eaglescliffe, Stockton.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews and a duty officer to the scene, and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by air.”

A Great North Air Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Our critical care team was activated at 8.20am to reports of a road traffic collision in Eaglescliffe.

"We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 8.31am."

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Cleveland Fire Brigade was called at 8.21am this morning (August 5) to a single vehicle road traffic collision on Yarm Road, Eaglescliffe. 

“Two fire engines from Thornaby Fire Station attended the scene. The stop call was received at 9.03am.”
