The A167 flyover, which has been closed since December 2024 due to safety concerns, is being dismantled in a complex operation to remove the ageing concrete structure.
Demolition began in April and is expected to continue until October.
Anneliese Hutchinson, strategic director for economy, innovation and growth at Gateshead Council, recently said: "The demolition has been described as the most complicated project of its type in the country."
Originally, the council estimated the project would cost around £18 million, but more recent figures put the total at £31 million.
Ms Hutchinson confirmed that the costs had been "independently scrutinised" and said that "carrying out part of the demolition overnight to reduce traffic had contributed to the higher costs."
Despite the increase, the council has said the additional spending will not affect the immediate progress of the works.

The government has faced repeated calls to fund both the demolition and the regeneration of the surrounding area.
So far, no commitment has been made.
Recent photos show the progress of the demolition above key routes into Gateshead, including the Park Lane roundabout, which was closed to enable the works to continue.
