Police probe as driver flees scene of Sunderland crash

Residents were left horrified after a car was left battered and wedged on the bonnet of another vehicle in Sunderland yesterday.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident in St Luke's Road in the Pallion shortly before 5pm on Sunday (August 2).

Northumbria Police has now confirmed that a Suzuki collided with two stationary vehicles before the driver fled the scene. 

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Just before 5pm on yesterday (Sunday) we received a report of a three-vehicle collision on Saint Lukes Road in the Pallion area of Sunderland.

"It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, a Suzuki has collided with two stationary vehicles.

"The driver of the Suzuki fled the scene prior to officers arriving."

Officers confirmed that the road was partially blocked for a short period, to allow time for recovery of the vehicles. It has now fully re-opened.

Northumbria Police added: "Enquiries into the report are ongoing and anyone with information should send us a direct message on social media or use the live chat and report forms on our website."

Pictures from the scene showed a blue car wedged on two wheels against the bonnet of another car and debris scattered across the pavement.

The car appeared to have a smashed windscreen and other significant damage.

An eyewitness at the scene said: "I was just having a conversation when I heard this big bang.

"This isn't the first time something like that has happened around here.

"It's really scary."

It had initially been unclear whether anybody had been injured in the incident, however police have since confirmed that no injuries were reported.
