Aldi is planning to expand by opening new stores across the North East, backed by an investment over £300million.
The supermarket chain is targeting growth in Tyne and Wear, with South Shields, Jarrow, and Gateshead’s Team Valley.
Two areas in Newcastle have also been identified for potential new stores.
Aldi hopes the expansion will improve access to low-cost groceries while creating new jobs in the North East.
Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: "We know how important it is for people to have access to affordable, high-quality food close to where they live, which is why we’re focused on identifying the communities that would benefit most from a new Aldi store.
"Opening new stores in these areas means we can bring great value to more customers, while also creating jobs and offering industry-leading pay."
The proposed stores are part of Aldi’s broader UK growth strategy, backed by over £370 million investment in new stores this year.
The company is aiming for a long-term total of 1,500 locations nationwide; it currently operates over 1,052 UK stores.

Aldi said it is looking for freehold, leasehold, or long leasehold sites in visible, accessible locations.
The retailer is urging landowners and agents in Tyne and Wear to suggest suitable options as soon as possible.
Aldi also says it remains the UK’s highest-paying supermarket, with Store Assistants earning from £13.50 per hour, rising further with length of service.
