A County Durham pub named among some of the region's best has been put up for sale, with the owners saying it was a 'hard decision to make'.
The Square and Compass, in West Cornforth, is one of ten finalists in this year's The Northern Echo Best Pub competition after readers nominated their favourite locals from across County Durham and Darlington.
The village pub dates back to the early 1800s and has been operated by its current owners for the past three years, including being renovated.
The pub went up for sale in April. In a statement issued on their Facebook the pub said: "The Square and Compass is now for sale/lease. It has been a hard decision to make; however the right decision for us as a family.
"We are very thankful for the support over the last few years from all of our customers, who have now also become friends. You all keep your little village pub alive and thriving.
"The pub and the building has massive potential for someone to take the reins to continue to help it grow into something even more special.
"But it’s not goodbye just yet it’ll be business as usual so we’ll see you all at the bar as normal."
Described as the heart of the community, the pub is home to a pool team and regularly hosts bingo nights, quiz nights, live music and televised sporting events. It also has darts, chess and dominoes clubs.
