KU Bar, which has been a staple on Prince Regent Street since 2002, has unveiled plans to refresh its main bar lounge downstairs following a “significant investment”.
The last time the venue - which is the town’s longest running live music and late bar - had a revamp was just after the Covid pandemic.
There are hopes that the new look will give the feeling of “all-new KU from the moment you walk through the doors” while ensuring music fans can keep flocking for years to come.
Sleek LED bars, hanging disco balls, and new booths and seating are among the new additions featured in the new space, with the dancefloor still front and centre.
Other refurbishments include new toilets and an extended entrance foyer, with the words KU in red wallpapered across the walls both by the ticket booth and near the bar lounge entrance.
Promoter Jordan Kean said the refresh for KU, which regularly hosts gigs, including from a range of local talent, has been a long time in the making.
“The room had a bit of a refresh ahead of reopening just after the Covid years but it’s stayed mostly the same for a good amount of time now,” he explained.
“The main reason was just to keep with the times and give the room a fresh new look.
“It’s the first room people go in when they come through the doors so between the new room and the new, extended foyer you really get that feeling of an all-new KU from the moment you walk through the doors.
“The toilets are even getting an upgrade too so it’s a lot of change!”
Jordan said it was important to “strike a balance” between making the space more of a “lounge feel” while keeping the party atmosphere.
He continued: “An added perk is that since we opened The Social Room upstairs it’s became really popular for party bookings so to keep up with demand it’s a massive help to have the added option of downstairs for a function venue as well.
“The project is a significant investment for us but we felt it was really important to ensure people can enjoy coming to KU for years to come.”
Jordan said KU will remain open to the public throughout the works, although the main room will be shut for the next few weeks.

He said: “People can look forward to a completely new room to enjoy whether they’re coming to a gig, club night or function.
“You can still look forward to more of the same KU with club nights every Friday and Saturday night and a really exciting calendar full of live music coming up.
“We’ve had a lot of great reception to what we’ve shown so far and we’re just really looking forward to welcoming everyone in to see it for themselves now!”
