A family farm near Northallerton has built a loyal following, not for a farm shop or café, but for a solar-powered, self-service milk shed selling organic dairy straight from the herd.

An organic farm since 2001, Stamfrey Farm sits in West Rounton, at the foot of the North Yorkshire Moors, and has been farmed by the same family since 1963.

The farm converted to organic production in 2001, a shift the family credits with having a positive effect on the wildlife and environment across the holding.

Today the farm is home to around 110 free-range, grass-fed cows, whose milk supplies the entire operation, from fresh organic milk to handmade dairy products, all produced with what Stamfrey describes as "zero food miles".

The milk shed and self-service vending

Rather than a conventional farm shop, Stamfrey Farm operates through a distinctive self-service vending shed, built from oak sourced on the farm and powered entirely by solar energy.

The shed dispenses organic, pasteurised whole milk alongside a rotating menu of milkshakes, with six flavours available at any time, including permanent favourites like strawberry, chocolate and banana, plus three limited-edition specials refreshed every Thursday at 7am.

Beyond milk, the vending machines stock the farm's own clotted cream, a smooth drinking yoghurt called YORG, and Stamfrey's signature ice cream, made using the farm's clotted cream.

Local traybakes, including brownies, tiffin and millionaire's shortbread, are also handmade in small batches on site and sold alongside the dairy range.

What customers say

Visitors have consistently praised the quality of the milk itself, with one Facebook reviewer writing: "Have you tried Stamfrey Farm yet for their fresh milk and flavoured milk?

"Love it! Lovely fresh milk... I love this place. The cows are well cared for and grass fed."

Another described the appeal of the vending shed itself, saying: "How cute is this milk shed at Stamfrey Farm?

"We sampled the milk from this dairy... the shed itself has got two milk vending machines inside, with chocolate, banana and strawberry as the fixed flavours, and three guest flavours that rotate."

Food content creators have also been won over by the milkshakes, with one describing them as "Perfect organic milkshakes from Stamfrey Farm.

"No better feeling."

Award-winning clotted cream and yoghurt

Stamfrey Farm's clotted cream and yoghurt have both won their respective categories at the Great Yorkshire Show, where judges praised the farm's whole milk for its "beautifully sweet, creamy flavour" and "substantial cream layer, no faults".

The farm itself was also named Small Food Producer of the Year at the Deliciously Yorkshire Annual Awards, while its solar-powered milk shed picked up its own "Business of the Year" recognition.

The farm's reputation extends well beyond North Yorkshire, with its clotted cream supplied to Bettys Tea Rooms, the renowned Yorkshire tea room brand with locations across the region and a national following among afternoon tea enthusiasts.
