A Post Office branch is set to close in a North East town, leaving the coastal spot without a full-service site and staff facing redundancy.

The Redcar Post Office, on the High Street inside the TG Jones store, will shut permanently on Saturday, September 5, following the closure of the shop.

A spokesperson for TG Jones confirmed the news this morning (July 27), following discussions across social media.

They said: "As part our restructuring plan to ensure the long-term future of TG Jones, our Redcar store will close on September 5, 2026.

"We recognise that this will be difficult news for colleagues in-store, and our focus is on supporting them during this process.

"We will continue to serve customers throughout the coming weeks, ahead of the store's expected closure”.

The branch manager of the store also responded to rumours on Facebook, commenting: "Unfortunately, the Post Office will close permanently on September 5, and all Post Office staff will be made redundant.

"Believe me, this is not what any of the staff wanted. However, because TGJones is closing the store and Post Office staff are employed by TGJones, we are all being made redundant as a result."

The closure leaves Redcar without its main Post Office branch and comes amid wider changes to the high street, following the rebranding of former WHSmith stores to TGJones earlier this year.

The manager claims that other business owners have shown interest in taking on the Post Office, but nothing has been finalised.

Residents have taken to Facebook to express their disappointment.

One said: "There’s no wonder people complain about our dying town, no banks, empty shops and now no post office."

Another expressed their sympathy for the staff: "It's awful for the staff. Some have been there for decades and are now out of a job. They deserve better."

From September 5, customers will have to travel to alternative branches.

A limited Post Office counter does operate within the Banking Hub at Redcar Civic Centre, but it only offers cash transactions and does not provide postal products or parcel services.

The closure is the latest in a series of changes affecting Redcar town centre, with residents now waiting to see whether a new operator can be found to maintain postal services in the area.
