A small walking group of friends has turned a seaside stroll into a much‑loved local tradition, raising thousands of pounds over the years to support breast cancer care in the North East.
The latest walk, which raised £1,255.30, supports the breast unit at the University Hospital of North Tees and will help refurbish one of the unit's patient waiting areas.
Now in its 11th year, the annual event began in 2015 with a charity walk and has since grown into a regular community fundraiser.
Walker Val Kitching said: "This is our 11th year and we are always amazed by the generosity of those who donate to this service within our local hospitals.
"Thank everyone who donated to this essential service, and a special thank you to Choral Interlude choir who contributed a fantastic £250.
"We all know somebody who has had cancer, or we’ve been affected ourselves.
"We just want to give something back."
Nine women from across Hartlepool and Stockton once again completed the walk from Hartlepool Marina to Seaton Carew, joined by Milli the dog.
Some members of the group have received care from the North Tees breast unit, and all have been touched by breast cancer in some way.
Four members recently visited the hospital to present the cheque and see the waiting area that will benefit from their fundraising.
Elaine Smith, one of the walkers, said: "It’s stressful coming to this department and waiting and wondering what’s going on.
"If we can make that waiting area a little more relaxed and comfortable, then every step we take is worthwhile."
The fundraising efforts were warmly received by the hospital team.
Harriet Anderson, a breast care nurse at North Tees, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Val, Elaine and everyone involved in this year’s walk.
