Families are being promised a fun, free day out in Darlington town centre this summer as libraries return to the Market Square with a packed programme of stories, performances and hands-on activities.
Darlington Libraries will host the Library Takeover Day as part of its summer events programme on Wednesday, August 5 from 11am to 3pm.
The event will feature interactive storytelling from Imagine Me Storytelling, performances by the Darlington Academy of Performing Arts, a KPOP party, and the chance to meet local authors.
Cllr Libby McCollom, cabinet member for local services at Darlington Council, said: "Summer is always an exciting time for our libraries and this year’s programme is packed with creative, fun and educational activities for families to enjoy.
"Library Takeover Day is a fantastic opportunity to bring the magic of our libraries into the heart of the town centre, with storytelling, performances, authors and hands-on activities for all ages."
She also highlighted the return of the Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children and young people to read during the holidays with the chance to win prizes.
She said: "The Summer Reading Challenge is also a brilliant way to encourage children and young people to develop a lifelong love of reading during the holidays, with the added incentive of some fantastic prizes.
"I’d encourage everyone to come along, get involved and make the most of everything Darlington Libraries have to offer this summer."
Other summer events will take place at Darlington Library and Cockerton Library throughout the holidays, including workshops on slime making, science, comics, and crafts, as well as Rhymetime sessions for younger children.
Older children aged 11 to 16 can join the Scene Makers Film Club, a six-week course costing £12.50, covering screenwriting, film theory, and production, ending with the creation of their own film.
To celebrate the National Year of Reading, the Summer Reading Challenge invites children and young people aged 0 to 16 to rediscover the joy of reading and enter daily prize draws by borrowing books from either library.
