A machete attacker has been jailed for a “brutal” assault which left a man seriously injured.
The victim was said to have attended an address of an acquaintance in the Downham Court area of South Shields on the evening of Thursday December 4.
Following a short verbal altercation, defendant Caydon Sean arrived at the address armed with the weapon.
He then launched an attack on the victim, a man in his 30s, leaving him with serious and permanent injuries to his head and arm which required extensive medical treatment.
Police were immediately notified and an investigation was launched.
A few days later, Sean handed himself into police.
The following day, December 11, 2025, he was charged in connection with the incident and was subsequently remanded in custody.
Sean, 22, of Crofton Street, South Shields, stood trial at Newcastle Crown Court last month, where he was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He was back before the court today (Thursday July 16), when Judge Edward Bindloss, who presided over the trial, sentenced him to four years and nine months in prison.
Sean was also handed a 10-year restraining order to further protect the victim.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Daniel Ross, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a brutal attack which resulted in serious and lifelong injuries to the victim.
“Sean used extreme and completely unnecessary levels of violence that night.
“My heart goes out to the victim who must be completely traumatised by what has happened to him.”

Det Sgt Ross added: “We won’t tolerate violence amongst our communities, and I’m grateful to the team of officers who have worked hard to bring Sean to justice, meaning he is now behind bars.
“I am confident the streets of South Tyneside are now safer without him.
“I know nothing can erase what the victim has suffered, but hopefully today serves as some form of closure for him to move forward in whatever way he can.”
