New kids' pamper salon will have a focus on mental health

Halo Glow Spa, on Ashfield Terrace, is due to open on August 1 and will provide age-appropriate spa and pamper treatments for children of all ages.

Owners and long-time friends Lara Weddle and Vicky Butler say they want to create a safe place for children with complex needs.

Vicky, a civil servant, said: "My daughter, Hannah, had an accident in a playground which led to her having PTSD and anxiety and Lara, a teaching assistant, works with children with enhanced needs.

"We’ve got a lot of experience between us, and we wanted to create something different that focuses on mental health and wellbeing."

The Chester-le-Street pair will offer a range of services tailored to the individual client's needs.

Vicky said: "We’ll teach little relaxation techniques, or it can be a place to wind down with a couple of friends but also feel like they’re getting elevated spa treatments.

"We’ll be offering nails, head massages, makeup, and more.

"We also will be aware of sensory needs, and we’ll work with parents and carers to know what would be best."

The mums say they want to create an inclusive environment: "A lot of SEN (special educational needs) children get left out of parties and don’t get invited, and it’s just so unfair.

"We’ve been passionate about creating something like this for years.

"It’s really a labour of love.

"We want to make sure we incorporate all children."

Vicky also noted that the spa is not just for children with additional needs: "If people want to come in and have a wild party, then that’s also possible.

"We want to offer flexibility."

Lara and Vicky both have daughters, Lily Weddle and Hannah Butler, who will act as the ‘big sisters’ in the shop who can help the children if they feel overwhelmed.
