Tests have confirmed that Hemlington Lake is safe following concerns about potentially toxic levels of green and blue algae in the water.
Following reports by Middlesbrough Council last week regarding potentially dangerous blue and green algae in the water, tests by the Environment Agency have confirmed that the levels present are not harmful.
These tests, conducted on Wednesday (July 1), were prompted by reports of a potential algae bloom, which could have posed a risk to both humans and animals.
The lake does contain low levels of naturally occurring blue-green algae, along with other common, non-toxic green algae, but the Environment Agency has reassured residents that these levels are not a cause for concern.
Blue-green algae is a common occurrence, especially at this time of the year with the warmer water and hot weather.
Initially, the public was advised to keep away from the water as a precautionary measure, but this advice has now been lifted.
Residents in Middlesbrough are encouraged to report any concerns regarding algae in Hemlington Lake or anywhere else to the Environment Agency.
