A new salon is opening in Darlington after its owner won The Northern Echo's Best Hairdresser award two years in a row.

Cheryl Balcombe, who owns Clique Salon in Newton Aycliffe, is preparing to open her brand new salon in West Park Garden Village.

The salon was shortlisted for the Northern Echo's Best Hairdresser Award in 2024, and won the title in 2025 and again in 2026.

Ms Balcombe announced the news on social media, saying: "When I opened my first salon, I never imagined just how much it would change my life.

"What started as a huge leap of faith, with so much fear and uncertainty, has grown into something bigger than I ever thought possible.

"There have been so many moments where I’ve doubted myself, wanted to give up, and questioned whether I was capable of this… but here we are.

"I’m so proud (and honestly a little emotional) to finally say that Clique Salons is opening its second salon in West Park, Village Green, Darlington.

"This journey has not been easy. The stress, the setbacks, the long days, the sleepless nights… but every challenge has led to this moment.

"To my clients, my team, my family, and everyone who has supported me. Most importantly to my amazing husband. Thank you. You’ve helped build this dream with me.

"This isn’t just another salon. It’s proof that taking risks, staying strong, and believing in yourself can lead to incredible things."

The salon's award victories have helped the Newton Aycliffe business grow.

Speaking to The Northern Echo earlier this year, Cheryl said: "Our team is now expanding and from every Echo competition we have seen our requests just blow up from recommendations and it is part of the reason we have been able to expand and get ready to open our second salon.

"It is absolutely brilliant, we are all so so happy."

In another social media post, Cheryl shared that she will be working three days at the Darlington salon and two days at the Newton Aycliffe one.

Cheryl set up Clique in the summer of 2023, three years after Covid, while working self-employed.

The Newton Aycliffe hybrid salon brings together self-employed and employed stylists.
