A new council pest control service is being introduced to help tackle infestations in homes.

The scheme will launch in Middlesbrough on Monday (July 6), offering free treatment for common household pests such as rats, mice, bedbugs, and cockroaches.

The service will be available to both homeowners and private renters.

Chis Cooke, Mayor of Middlesbrough, said: "We've listened to the concerns raised by our residents and designed a service that will make a real difference to people’s lives.

"Pest problems can have a serious impact on people's health and wellbeing, especially for vulnerable residents. By offering free treatment for the most common pests, we are removing a cost barrier to help people act quickly to get infestations under control.

"That will improve the day-to-day lives of everyone in Middlesbrough."

The service will cover treatment for pests inside homes, private gardens, and garages.

Newly appointed officers will not only tackle immediate pest issues but will also work to address the root causes of infestations.

They will provide advice on hygiene and steps residents can take to prevent future problems.

Depending on how serious the infestation is, technicians may need to visit the property two or three times. While the main service will be free, specialist treatments will still come with a charge.

Residents in social housing will continue to receive pest control support through their landlords.
