A County Durham couple who have been running their own barbers for more than a decade have built their business around their family and community.
Couple Claire, 40, and Guner Sevim, 46, from Newton Aycliffe have been at the helm of G and C Barbers for the last 13 years.
The pair were based in Spennymoor for a decade with a five-strong team, and moved to Chilton almost three years ago hoping for a better work-life balance.
They now operate mainly on an appointments-only basis, allowing them to manage their time and family routine more effectively.
Claire said: “We were quite shocked when we were nominated but so honoured; it came as such a nice surprise.
"Chilton has welcomed us with open arms and we love the community here that we have, but we also appreciate massively all the customers from Spennymoor and Ferryhill who still come and support us.”
Despite the shift to appointments, the business still caters for walk-in customers, with barber Courtney Graham offering a walk-in service four days a week.
Claire added: "We are incredibly proud to have been serving our community for almost 13 years.
"We spent ten successful years at our previous shop and have now been based in Chilton for nearly 3 years.
"Since moving to Chilton, we believe we have brought something different to the village. Our focus has always been on providing high-quality barbering alongside a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Over the years, we have built strong relationships with our customers, many of whom have become loyal regulars and friends.
"We are grateful for the support the local community has shown us. The trust and respect our customers give us is something we never take for granted, and it’s those connections that have helped our business continue to grow and thrive."
Claire said being named in the Echo's top ten shortlist is an "incredible honour".
